Monday morning HR check-in: five questions to move a people issue forward

Monday mornings have a way of revealing the people issues that could not be squeezed into last week. An absence has left a team stretched. A manager is putting off a difficult conversation. A restructure is being discussed, but nobody is quite sure what should happen first.

It can be tempting to tackle whichever issue is loudest. A better starting point is to take 20 minutes to work out what needs attention, who is affected and what information you still need.

Start with the facts

Write down what has happened, what has been reported and what is still an assumption. Check the relevant records, previous conversations and any immediate deadlines. If there is a welfare concern, deal with that promptly and sensitively. A clear picture at the start can prevent a rushed response from creating more work later.

Choose the next conversation

Think about who needs to be heard before a decision is made. That might be the employee, their manager or others involved in a proposed change. Decide who will speak to them, what the purpose of the conversation is and what support they may need. Listen first, then record the key points accurately.

Look at the effect on the whole team

A people problem rarely sits neatly with one person. If a colleague is absent, who has picked up the work? If responsibilities are changing, have managers explained what is expected? If a team has lost capacity, is the remaining workload realistic? These questions help you address the pressure behind the immediate issue.

Take one useful step today

You do not have to resolve every HR issue before lunch. You can identify the person responsible, arrange the right conversation, gather missing information and set a date for a decision. Tell those affected what happens next, even when the answer is not yet final.

For a Monday check-in, ask yourself: What is the most pressing people issue? What do I know for certain? Who needs to be involved? What can I do today? When will I review progress?
